But you don't just start off in this business with a home run. In fact, for my first few years, I didn't find much of anything. But my first hit came when I was 25, in 1971, when I made my first find--in the Oswego formation, in northwest Oklahoma, in what is now known as the Oakdale field.

I started working in the oilfield upon graduating high school. I was on the service end of it, driving tank trucks for Johnny Geer for a couple years and learning about oil and gas production. I had a whole cadre of mentors. Floyd Harrington worked for Chris Well Service; he taught me about the well-servicing industry. Rocky Rockhold was a field foreman for Texaco and a wealth of knowledge. Don Longdon of Western Company was one of the best well treaters I knew; he taught me a lot about stimulating and fracking wells. (Yes, we've been fracking for a very long time.) Then there was Jack Ferchau and Jack Hodgden, who taught me about geology and operating wells.

Soon after that, I got it in my head to drill my first well. I had started Shelly Dean Oil Co., named after my first two daughters. There was an old well that had been drilled in 1943 with an old steam rig; it blew out and burnt the rig down.
